 What is Speed Dating?

Speed  dating is a big idea shrunk down into a very simple concept: Meet and interview multiple singles in 1 night in an attempt to narrow down your search for an ideal partner. An ideal partner or match is someone you meet at a speed dating event and find a connection with.

Most people know within the first 5 minutes of meeting someone on a first date whether they are interested in this person or not. With speed dating you are given this opportunity over and over and over again until you finally find someone you would actually enjoy an entire night with, possibly even a long term relationship. Today singles are perpetually at a shortage of time and we all know how much time can be wasted when going on first dates that lead to dead ends. Speed dating is the perfect solution for the dating scene because of its ability to get all the dating you would do all year and pack it into 1 night fun night giving you a chance to find someone that is actually worth your time in the future.

Many people consider speed dating to be a platform to find love, however it is very common for people to find friends as well. It also takes the awkwardness out of dating because of the anonymous match system. You don’t have to concoct clever rejection routines or dread wondering whether the date likes you as much as you like them.

So still wondering exactly how it works…

  1. The registration – daters start showing up to an event about a half an hour before the event starts and at this time you have a chance to sign in, get your, name tags and match cards. You will receive your free drink at the bar and get a chance to mingle with fellow daters and scope the scene.
  2. The Call – once everyone has arrived and signed in, the Host/ess will ring the first bell and call everyone in to introduce speed dating and explain the rotation and seating arrangements as well as the match card system.
  3. First Bell – once everyone has taken their seats (usually ladies take seats and men rotate) the First bell will ring and the timer will set.
  4. The Rotation – The bell will ring every five minutes to indicate the end of the date and a 30 second grace period is given to give everyone a chance to write down their notes for the date. Following the 30 second grace period the men will take a seat at the next date (usually to their right as rotation will normally work clockwise).
  5. The Finally – Once everyone has had a chance to meet each other you will go back to the registration table and hand in your match cards and collect your gift basket. Everyone is encouraged to stay after the event to hang out at the bar as drink specials will be arranged for all speed daters as well as special events scheduled (check the special event section of each specific event to see the details)
  6. The Matches – within the next 24 hours you will receive your matches by email. The results are calculated by computing reciprocal matches. This means that if dater #1 picks dater #7 on their match card, and dater #7 picks dater #1 as well, then that is considered a match and both daters receive each other contact information.

Happy Hunting!
